Although state aid was dwindling and budgeting becoming tighter, requests continued to be presented to the Board of Education from faculty, school-sponsored organizations and parents for new and expanded programs. The foresight of the original Foundation Members, Board of Education members, Kathleen Flynn, Joe Fryman, Jerry Kobs, Sheila Pille, Susie Ryan, Mary Sully, Gwen McKinnis, LeeRoy Swanson, Dick Wardell and then-Superintendent Gerald Otte, provided an avenue for funding requests yet not jeopardize state aid for the District. This Board then appointed Katy Flynn, Jerry Kobs, Dick Wardell, Bee Krantz, Bud Robinson, Richard Hunt, Bob Blobaum, Phil Larsen, and Dr. Carol Weckmuller as the Foundation Directors.
Through the years, the Foundation remained a quiet unsung jewel as it received monies from estates, gifts, and memberships and in turn provided support for programs and scholarships unable to be funded in the regular budget. During 2010, the current Foundation Board of Directors, Dale Christenson, Scott Flynn, Richard Hansen, Margaret Hanson, Lyle Schjodt, Leslie Watts, Dr. Carol Weckmuller, and current Superintendent Jane Stavem, decided they wanted to become more visible and more productive.
As 2011 dawned under the leadership of President Richard Hansen ’68, a new mission statement was adopted and plans are underway to grow and expand the foundation. The Blair Community School’s Foundation has launched a new website at www.blairschoolsfoundation.org.
Follow us on facebook and twitter @bcsfoundation. Although it will continue to be a “work in progress” as it is developed and expanded, we hope you check back periodically. This should be a great place to find information on upcoming class reunions, alumni, the annual alumni brunch and other various programs happening in Blair.
You can even order some Blairwear on line. We’ll keep you updated on what’s new and how you can help. Information is also available through the school website www.blairschools.org. Your Foundation is just a click away.
